Launching the Sustainability Initiative for Ministry of Health

Oct 10, 2024

On 10/10, the Ministry of Health (MOH) introduced the Sustainability Initiative, marking a significant step toward building a climate-resilient healthcare system in Brunei Darussalam. The initiative, which aims to integrate sustainability into healthcare practices, was officiated by the Minister of Health and brought together key stakeholders from various sectors.

As the lead of the Climate, Health, and Sustainability Taskforce, I delivered the opening speech at the launch event, emphasising how this initiative aspires to transform culture and behaviour within the healthcare sector. Its goal is to preserve the safety and quality of healthcare services while ensuring they remain resilient and sustainable for future generations. The speech highlighted the initiative’s focus on addressing the growing health impacts of climate change, such as increased heat-related illnesses and respiratory issues from seasonal haze. A video presentation further illustrated the initiative’s goals and vision, setting the tone for the collaborative effort ahead.

The launch event also showcased contributions from government agencies, NGOs, social enterprises, and research institutions, underscoring the collaborative approach needed to tackle climate-related challenges. Among the key contributors was the Brunei Climate Change Secretariat, a central figure in the nation’s climate action efforts under the Prime Minister’s Office. Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences shared their research on climate change and its impacts, while the Department of Meteorological Services presented critical data on Brunei’s changing weather patterns and the increasing frequency of severe weather events.

MOH’s Department of Environmental Health and Infection Prevention and Control highlighted their work on promoting sustainable and safe healthcare practices. NGOs like Big BWN and Green Brunei demonstrated the importance of grassroots efforts, while innovative start-ups hosted by the Brunei Innovation Lab showcased fresh ideas for tackling climate-related issues.

This initiative reflects Brunei’s commitment to safeguarding public health and the environment. By uniting stakeholders and driving a collective effort, the Ministry of Health is working to ensure that healthcare remains resilient, safe, and sustainable in the face of climate challenges. Borneo Bulletin article.
