Youth Empowerment Conference 2019, Brunei

The two-day Youth Empowerment Conference (YEC) was launched at the Jerudong International School Arts Centre yesterday by Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd and Curious Mind, bringing together speakers and delegates from 15 different countries.

Themed ‘Own Your Future’, the YEC highlighted thought-provoking conversations on global mindset, the future of work and social values that aimed to inspire youth to think beyond themselves to make a difference in Brunei and beyond.

The conference featured 17 sessions that showcase best practices, case studies, industry dynamics and cross-cultural encounters from recognised speakers across the region, with an assortment of plenary sessions, keynote speeches and breakout discussions.

International speakers at the event include: President of the United Nations Association of Western Australia Dr Sandy Chong; Junior Master Chef Finalist of the Philippines Louise Mabulo; Environmental Thought Leader Dr Renard Siew, who is also an Asia’s 21 Young Leader by Asia Society and Kar Fei Cheah (Malaysia) Forbes Coach Council; Regional Sales Director of UB Tech Ray Ong; and Lego Serious Play Facilitator David O’Hagan.

Also among those featured at the event were British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Richard Lindsay, Chairman of Asia Inc Forum Dato Timothy Ong, Total Brunei Corporate Services Manager Harina Ramlee, Deputy Head of Ophtamalogy at the Ministry of Health Dr Noor Affizan and Managing Director of CIC Environmental Services Daniel Wong.

Conference Director Shaun Hoon said, “Coming up with an event of this scale is a gargantuan task. It is truly a joint effort of the entire community coming together with the shared vision wanting our youth to succeed.

“We have had the support of three main sponsors and 15 generous benefactors that were responsible for providing scholarships for 21 schools and higher institutions to attend the event,” he added.

The event was supported by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry and Brunei Tourism Board, along with airline partner Royal Brunei Airlines as well as the Centrepoint Hotel as the official hotel.
