Emory University – Equity Initiative Global Learning (Atlanta)
For the 2nd week of our 2021 Equity Initiative global learning experience, we travelled to Emory University in Atlanta, There we heard from Veda Johnson and her colleagues from ‘PARTNERS’ for Equity in Child and Adolescent Health describe health inequities associated with social determinants and race. Other inspiring speakers included Camara Jones of Morehouse School of Medicine, and Sheryl Heron of the Emory University School of Medicine who spoke passionately about the paths that can be taken to overcome racial inequities in health.
Visits to the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, the Carter Center, and other incredible organisations in Atlanta gave us a deeper understanding of various health systems and inequities as well as the history of the civil rights movement. We had many opportunities to connect as a group and the privilege of deep discussion with world-class health and community leaders, building our knowledge in key areas of negotiation, and socioeconomic policy..
