A New Partnership to Support Community Vision Screening

Dec 6, 2025

The Brunei Ophthalmology Society recently signed the Vision Aid Project agreement with Hibiscus EP (Brunei) BV (HEB), marking an important step in improving access to essential eye care services.

The signing took place in conjunction with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and was attended by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports; Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Nazmi bin Haji Awang Mohamad. The project focuses on vision screening and awareness, extending eye care beyond traditional clinical settings.

Refractive error remains a significant and often underestimated issue in Brunei, with almost 40 per cent of recorded cases occurring in children under the age of 12. Early detection and timely access to spectacles are critical in preventing long-term complications such as amblyopia.

At the event, Harina Ramlee, Corporate Services Manager at HEB, spoke about the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility. I would like to thank her and the HEB team for their support and willingness to work with BOS on this initiative.

Vision screening for participating organisations followed the signing, reinforcing a shared focus on practical, community-based eye care. Partnerships like this matter because access to eye care is shaped as much by delivery models as by clinical expertise, allowing screening and early intervention to be integrated into everyday settings.
